Unfortunately this is also the reason why this is becoming a HUGELY competitive industry and only 10% of a guys who apply to become a games tester ever get to make a full time career out of it.
There’s a lot of speculation and misconception about what a games tester really does. If you think it’s as simply as playing games for fun all day and getting paid millions for doing it, then you are wrong.
I don’t want you to be disillusioned about this industry. The truth is that you can earn great money as a games tester, get a lot of perks and have an awesome lifestyle. Only An Average Gamer?
How good a player are you really? So many players are only great in one game and then they think they should become a tester. Although it will help, you are better of becoming an expert at a certain genre of games and never restrict yourself to just one platform. Diversify and master at least Xbox and Playstation and including PC games will broaden your appeal. Building a name and a reputation online is a great start to proof your skill and to get recognition you will need when applying for a game tester job.
Failure To Stand Out
Like any other job application you need to stand out. This is true for both beginners and experiences testers. If you can get their attention and be MEMORABLE you will not only get more jobs but move up the earnings ladder much quicker. How can you stand out? What’s unique and interesting about you? You need to sell yourself and whatever you sell you need to be able to deliver.
Communication Skills
Testing games for a living is much more than just being a good gamer. One of the most important skills you need is the ability to communicate. You need to communicate with the game developers and have the ability to explain aspects of a game to them. After all, they pay you for your opinion, your attention to detail and your ability to communicate back to them is vital. You must have or develop both your verbal and written skills as you will speak to them and write reports.

Gamers are notoriously disorganized and “lazy” which is also the reason why so few gaming fans ever find video game tester jobs. What game designers and developers are really looking for in a tester is someone with a very sharp eye for detail and someone who is extremely organized and methodical. You need to be able to spot the smallest bugs and errors and you need to be organized enough to report these errors quickly and accurately. You need to be able to concentrate for long periods of time and be “sharp” when working under tight deadlines.
Start Low
All beginner game testers think they are going to walk into Playstation’s headquarters and start earning millions playing all the latest PS3 games. Sorry to burst your bubble but if you are not willing to start low you won’t make it. The average game tester only earn $40,000 – although there are a lot of perks. Experience and reputation are the two most important aspects and they can only be built over time. Some of the top guys earn $150,000 and get some superb perks. As you build a reputation and developers start to value your opinion you can move up the ranks and get into a very comfortable position.
Equipment
One of the fallacies of being a tester is that they will give you all the equipment. When you are first starting out they will probably only give you the game. You MUST have the equipment. Make sure you have at least 2 consoles (latest ones) and if you are going after PC games you must have a proper gaming machine. When you start getting some experience they will start giving you equipment but without something decent to start with you really don’t stand a chance of getting a video game tester job.

There’s an old saying that if you are running east looking for a sunset you will never find it. Finding, applying and getting a job as a games tester is tricky.
